My last three PMs remain "new" and unread even after I have read and responded to them. Is anyone else experiencing this or is someone tampering with my PM box?

No one PMs me and I don't PM anyone else, or at least very rarely. So I can't give you any feedback on this Carol. Most of what I have to say, I say here on the boards, unlike some people who seem to want to keep their opinions unknown to others because these opinions are probably quite disgusting.

that's happened to me before ... in 2006, a PM from claypot was "new" for about 3 weeks, even tho i read it over and over, pretty much everyday

My PMs are working fine. Once read, they stay read.

or a heavenly PM? .. (it was from clay after all, and not hiram or somebody like that  )

Yes, once I read that one, it did not appear as unread afterwards.
What you are experiencing could be a corruption in your browser's cache. I would try and delete all files and cookies if you are using Internet Explorer: Tools > Internet Options
