Are you sitting down? If not you better... oh, no need to check Snopes, this is directly from the governments USGS.gov website. It is all true, and it has been known about for several years!

Goodness, you had me a bit alarmed there.  Have you ever driven through western ND?  They are pumping oil all over the place there.  So now if they found more oil, than yay for america!

Love, Gayle

It won't do this country a bit of good if the radical left keeps blocking us from drilling for it. So, I guess for now, we will just have to wait for a change in the power structure, and continue being dependent on out enemies for petro. My understanding is that it will take at least 10 years for the technology for viable alternative energy.

With such a discovery, the very existence of so much oil should be reducing the crude oil prices world-wide in a free economy. So maybe the US troops will leave Iraq even earlier than planned, eh?

That's up to the Commander In Chief. Let's see what he does.

See, this is exactly what I mean about the way you use big numbers out of context.

So, there are maybe three and a half billion barrels of oil in North Dakota.  That seems like a huge number, right?

Except that the U.S. oil consumption is about 20 million barrels a day.

3.5 billion divided by 20 million is 175.  In other words, this is enough oil to last us half a year.

In the grand scheme of things, this is like finding a bunch of change under your couch cushions.  Maybe it lets you buy an extra pack of smokes, but it definitely doesn't solve your financial problems.

If 3.5 billion barrels is enough to fuel the United States for 6 months, that's considerably more than change from under your couch cushions. It might be better compared to half your yearly salary.

Well, maybe so.  But if I have a financial problem, with my expenses outstripping my income, and I suddenly find half my yearly salary through some stroke of luck, that doesn't solve my problem.  It has the very strong potential to just delay me from finding a solution to my problem for a few months.

Right. And where's the part of that story that says, "Those damn liberals won't let us drill for this oil!"??

Nowhere, that's where.

Oil companies are drilling for oil all over the place in the United States right now. No one is stopping them. There are oil rigs and an entire oil refinery (ExxonMobil) within 2 miles of my home. There is absolutely no controversy involved in oil companies drilling for oil in the US. Oil is being pumped out from under the land I live on. When we bought our house, the mineral rights under it were specifically excluded.

The only controversy I am aware of is drilling for oil in a wildlife refuge in Alaska, and drilling for oil off the coast of California.

Montana? North Dakota? Have at it. Which is what is actually happening.

Damn those facts.

There is probably enough oil on this earth to burn away the entire O-Zone, at which time we won't need it.  The problem is refineries.  The big oil companies bought the smaller refineries and shut them down to control the supply and drive prices up.

The problem isn't liberals, it's big business, which is supported by conservatives.
