I agree. Masquerade was always my favorite number too.
On a related, but not too closely related, note, I recently saw the 10th Anniversary Dream Cast Concert of Les Miserables. The show, of course, was incredible, but I about flipped when I saw something at the end.
After the show, and after the congratulatory (and self-congratulatory) comments by the producers, they did a version of The Songs of Angry Men sung by a representative of everyone who played Valjean in all the countries around the world. A great tribute, no question...but when they got to Japan, guess who was Japan's Valjean? Chairman Kaga of Iron Chef!

Les Miserables!!! I always wanted to see that show but someone put me off cos they said it was depressing. So I went to to see Miss Saigon instead and that was freaking depressing....groan....But I wish I hadn't taken any notice and just went to see LM because I saw a small piece performed on the Monarchy series and it looked coolio.
That 10 anniversary tribute sounds fantastic A2. You lucky thing. And Masquerade is your fave Phantom one too? how cool.
What other shows do you like A2?

HELL NO! Les Miz is one of the most uplifting shows I've ever seen! But, I grant you, that doesn't mean you won't shed a tear or two.

Unfortunately, you have to see it on stage, there is no movie version, period.
The 10th Anniversary Dream Cast Concert comes close, but it's a concert. The actors mostly stand there and sing the songs. There is a bit of on screen explanation of the action going on, but it isn't the show itself.

It was great, but I have seen the show live twice, so I knew what was going on. Still stirring, though. They got the best of everyone who ever played in the show. Colm Wilkinson is, as always, brilliant, and I absolutely fell in love with Lea Salonga (speaking of Miss Saigon) as Eponine.

My favorite musical of all time is, without question, Man of La Mancha. I've seen it several times on stage: once with Richard Kiley (original broadway star), once with John Reardon (same production, he did the sunday matinee), once with, believe it or not, Hal Linden. I've also seen a college production and even a high school production (not my high school either, that's how much I try to see the show whenever possible). I missed the Raul Julia production, though, sad to say, and I wish I'd gotten the chance to see the more recent David Stokes Mitchell version...that one has a killer soundtrack! Better than Kiley in more than a couple places.
The movie version with Peter O'Toole is really good, though...and after seeing the episode of Quantum Leap I'd pay good money to see Scott Bakula do it. (Odd trivia: the guy who played Sancho in that episode actually played Sancho on broadway in the 2002 revival.)
Some of my other favorite musicals are You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (my daughter LOVES the soundtrack!) and Bye Bye Birdie.

SA: Oh for Pete's sake! I want to slap myself around the head for listening to someone elses stupid report about it. Now I'm stuck down here in NZ and didn't get to see it.

SA: Totally, most things HAVE to be seen on stage even if there is a movie version, I think that about Phantom too, I mean the (new) movie is good n' all, but that show was meant to be seen on stage. I thought there was a Les Mis movie with Liam Neeson? or am I mistaken?

SA: You and me both, I've outed myself too, lol, I love the theatre A2, I was always going to stuff when I lived in London, they had some really cool and unusual plays too.....theatre is one of the best things ever, love it!

Yeah, there was a movie with Liam Neeson. It's an adaptation of the book, it isn't a musical.
(Although, strictly speaking, I contend Les Miz isn't a musical...It's an opera.)

Nope. Unfortunately, these days, the big lavish musicals aren't in the budget all that often.
And Masquerade is your fave Phantom one too? how cool.

Basically, it's a musical version of the story of Don Quixote...but, moreso, it's the story of Quixote's author, Don Miguel de Cervantes.
The signature song, The Impossible dream, by Brian Stokes Mitchell:

And the original, Richard Kiley:

Then you probably saw the version where Sam leaped into a man understudying the role of Quixote in Syracuse. He ends up playing the role, and does a great job, I think.
Some of my other favorite musicals are You're A Good Man Charlie Brown (my daughter LOVES the soundtrack!) and Bye Bye Birdie.

Me too.
I did some acting in college, but more than anything else, it made me realize how much I'd love to be a playwright.
-- A2SG, I do have a play idea or two floating around....one of which may even be a musical....

Oh how incredibly cool! You should develop that A2, what a gift. Can you reveal the basic plot of your musical idea?
I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up.....

The idea's pretty embryonic now, so there isn't much to reveal as of yet.
Basically, it's a story that spans decades, and I would like to use different musical styles over different eras, like a 1950s rock and roll number, a 60s protest song, a 70s disco number, an 80s power ballad, etc.
-- A2SG, it's not exactly ready for tryouts yet.....
