You said that Palin's accent could be "corrected."
Toward what?
This has nothing to do with strawmen. Can you give me a word she pronounces incorrectly? Just one?
Maybe if HH had used the term "modified" you would not have grabbed onto this bone.
That's just wishful thinking, Yoki. If I had said "modified", Stiggy would have just found a different, but equally insignificant, bone somewhere else. Same ole, same ole....

I really haven't noticed a long Californian "R". They seem to have that same "flat midwestern" style of speech, at least to me. After all, it stands to reason that most mainstream films would want to sound more or less like the newscasters, and most of those actors are in California.
I believe California and Nevada have the same accent. The long "R" sound was pointed out to me by both a native Floridian and a New Yorker (at separate times). I started paying attention to my accent, comparing it to other regions, and noticed it as well. Californians also have what sounds like a lazy slur, where they will often run words together without a distinguished break. This was pointed out to me by a Liverpudlian (of all people). He asked me to slow down and speak more clearly because my accent was a bit "mumbly."
Interestingly, some accents seem to be cultural rather than regional. Somehow, the Jerry Springer types - chronically unemployed "trailer trash" - seem to have an accent that isn't region-dependent. And there seems to be a universal "stoner accent" as well.
I hadn't noticed a "tralier trash" accent but I believe I've heard the "stoner accent" before. The one I notice the most is the non-regional "teenager accent." Not a Valley Girl, but saying.... "He was like this, and I was like that, and I was like 'No way!' And we were like laughing..." If the word "like" was removed from their vocabulary I doubt they would be able to communicate at all.

And what are you: the Rogert Ebert of the "Accent Performance" critics? You give Palin a thumbs down in your objective, I'm sure, Book of Correct Accents, while I guess JFK gets a thumbs up for his stellar performance in pronouncing Cuba as Cuber. Or maybe unlike Palin with her accent, JFK wasn't performing, he was just Jack being Jack.
But OK, I'll play along. (The key word being "play," and in games we don't need evidence.) Palin fakes her accent. It's a performance.
So what's the theory here? That if you wake Palin up at 3AM, before she has time to step on stage, that she will pronounce her words in a different manner than she does in public, for whom she performs? Is that it? If so, we have a big problem. Either:
(1). Palin's public accent is more irritating to the HH-types than her actual accent. If so, why the hell would she modify (a tip of the hat to yoki for that modified word) her accent to intentionally irritate people? Or,
(2). Palin's public accent is less "irritating" than her private one, meaning that she must have done exactly what HH suggested: attempted to CORRECT her accent.
So what's left to criticize with this accent thing? That Palin didn't correct it far enough? Does she have to sound like a Channel 2 Action News anchor before she stops irritating people like HH?
Look, you don't like the lady. Fair enough. I don't like some people either. But the irrational lengths that some of you guys go to, to attack those toward whom you have personal animosity, grows more and more astounding every day in this place.

It seems to me that Palin's accent is genuine. She tries to suppress it, and when she is reading a prepared speech, she is fairly successful. But when she is caught off guard, and isn't sure of her answer to a question, it shows up.
The fact that it is sometimes there, and sometimes not, makes a lot of people think she is faking it, when it is just the opposite.
So what's left to criticize with this accent thing? That Palin didn't correct it far enough? Does she have to sound like a Channel 2 Action News anchor before she stops irritating people like HH?
That would help. It may not be fair, but I think that overall, her accent is a negative.

FWIW, I have no personal animosity towards Palin. I disagree with her on most issues, but she seems like a nice enough person.

Don't know. Never been a part of one of those. I doubt they are boring though, assuming you're the type who likes that sort of thing. It's just not my thing.

That's too funny!
However, he was famous as a body-builder and movie star way before he became a politician.
I wonder if he'd be a more effective politician if he didn't speek so strangely?
Prolly not.

Yeah I know, he's the definitive American Dream. Look up "American Dream" in the dictionary and a picture of Arnie should be staring back. He comes to America with that freaky dodgy accent on nothing more than a few ripling muscles, and the next minute he's in the movies and then Governer of California!
Freakin awesome or what!
